Why Do Classic Mustangs Run Hot in Traffic?

Updated October 24, 2026 · Cedillo's Classic & Auto Repair, Fullerton

Quick answer: An older Mustang may run hotter in stop-and-go traffic because airflow across the radiator is lower at idle. A cooling fault, fan problem, restricted radiator or incorrect tune can make the symptom worse.

At Cedillo’s Classic & Auto Repair in Fullerton, we believe useful information should help you make a better decision about your car. Here is what to look for, what to record and when to seek professional advice.

What makes traffic different

At cruising speed, air passes through the radiator. When the car is stationary, fan operation and the cooling system become much more important. Comparing temperature behavior at idle and on the road gives a technician useful diagnostic clues.

Cooling checks that matter

Radiator condition, coolant level and mixture, hoses, thermostat, fan shroud and fan drive all deserve attention. A vehicle may also run hot because of ignition timing or other engine conditions; replacing a radiator without testing can miss the root cause.

What to tell the shop

Describe whether the gauge rises only at stoplights, with the A/C on, on grades or after a long drive. Note recent repairs, any coolant smell and whether the heater changes temperature. Never remove a hot radiator cap.

Did you know?

A fan shroud is not just decoration; it helps the fan pull air through the radiator rather than around it.

Cedillo’s maintenance tip

Before a summer cruise, check for visible leaks and inspect fluid levels only when the engine is cold. Watch the temperature gauge rather than assuming an older car can tolerate overheating.

When to put safety first

If coolant is boiling, steam is present or the gauge enters the danger zone, pull over safely and shut the engine off. Arrange an inspection rather than continuing to drive.

Frequently asked questions

Does every classic Mustang need a larger radiator?

No. First determine whether the existing cooling system is functioning and whether the symptom has a specific cause.

Why is it cooler on the freeway?

Greater airflow may help the radiator shed heat, but the fan, shroud and other components still need evaluation.
