Classic Car Ignition Systems: Points, Spark Plugs and Timing Explained

Updated October 24, 2026 · Cedillo's Classic & Auto Repair, Fullerton

Quick answer: A classic ignition system must create a strong spark at the correct time. Worn points, incorrect gaps, aging wires or an ignition timing problem can make an otherwise healthy engine run poorly.

At Cedillo’s Classic & Auto Repair in Fullerton, we believe useful information should help you make a better decision about your car. Here is what to look for, what to record and when to seek professional advice.

The role of each component

Spark plugs ignite the air-fuel mixture. Depending on the vehicle, ignition points, a condenser, distributor, coil, rotor and cables work together. Wear or incorrect adjustment can change spark quality and timing.

Symptoms worth documenting

Hard starting, stumbling on acceleration, rough idle and loss of power can have ignition-related causes, but fuel delivery and mechanical engine problems may imitate them. Record engine temperature and driving conditions when symptoms arise.

Why tuning is more than replacing plugs

A proper evaluation considers ignition timing, dwell or electronic triggering where applicable, advance mechanisms and vehicle specifications. Changing settings without a baseline may conceal the underlying fault.

Did you know?

Two similar-looking classic engines may have different ignition systems after decades of repairs and upgrades.

Cedillo’s maintenance tip

Keep a record of spark plug type and gap, ignition settings and any modifications. This helps future technicians service a car that no longer matches factory configuration.

When to put safety first

A persistent misfire or loss of power should be inspected rather than driven hard in traffic.

Frequently asked questions

Do all classics still use ignition points?

No. Some left the factory with electronic ignition and others have been converted.

Can bad ignition timing make an engine run hot?

Improper timing can contribute to engine operating problems, but cooling faults and other causes must also be checked.
